There are several ways that Yankee Fiberglass Pools provides GREEN alternatives for our swimming pool clients and when we talk about a “green” pool we’re not talking about the color of the water.

As we become more conscious of sustainable practices for homes and garden, that concern should extend to managing in-ground swimming pools in an environmentally sound and sustainable way. A “green” pool pays attention to energy efficiency and water and resource conservation.

A “green” in-ground swimming pool:

Minimizes or eliminates the use of chemicals: Use a salt-sterilization system instead of chlorine. Pools generally need chlorine concentrations of 2 to 4 parts per million to stay clean. The chemical generally is added weekly and in high quantities, but it can evaporate fairly quickly.

A salt system converts salt into chlorine, eliminating the need to transport and handle chlorine tablets or liquid. Chlorine is a toxic chemical. We probably shouldn’t be drinking it or swimming in it.

Pool water that is sanitized by a salt system feels like bath water and won’t ruin hair or bathing suits the way chlorine does.

Minimizes the energy used for pumping and heating. Use a more efficient pump and filter. We recommend Hayward Variable Speed pumps and heaters and energy efficient lighting systems. LED lighting systems cost half to operate than conventional lighting and with 30 – 40,000 hour bulb life.

Reduces reliance on fresh water by minimizing evaporation

Eco-friendly swimming pools use pool covers. In-ground swimming pool covers keep the pool cleaner, reducing chemical and filter maintenance costs. A pool cover also reduces the amount of water and chlorine lost to evaporation. And, covers help prevent heat loss, keeping your pool water comfortably warm, minimizing pool heater usage and possibly extending your swimming season.

1. Due to the non-porous finish of our pools, fewer chemicals are needed because algae is less prone to attach to smoother surfaces. Additionally, less cleaning will have to be performed using automatic pool cleaners saving electricity. When automatic pool cleaners are used, the time it takes to clean the pool will be reduced saving additional energy.

2. As fiberglass pools do not rely on steel panels or steel mesh/rebar for structure, they do not have the potential to leech chemicals and rust back into the groundwater as a more conventional constructed pool would.

3. Fiberglass pools in general act as a natural insulator. Your filter and heater will potentially run dramatically less than equipment on vinyl/gunite pools. Depending on the climate and size of the pool, a homeowner can save up to $225.00 per month on their pool maintenance with our pools versus other types of pools (vinyl/gunite).

4. Not only do our pools use less chemicals and energy, our pools never need to be re-plastered, nor do they have a liner to replace – thus resulting in less waste in our landfills.

5. No back-washing. We use cartridge filters so there is no need to wash your filter with treated pool water.
